Close by on the coast lies Orange counties Huntington beach where the legendary Duke Kahanamoku brought surfing from Hawaii to the mainland in 1911.There are many international surfing contests held here and you can find out all you want to know about the sport at the nearby surfing museum. Aside from surfing you can enjoy the coastline by renting a bike or hiking in the wetlands. History recalls two different reasons as to the popularity of this area and depending on whom you ask you'll be informed that it was either the discovery of oil offshore or the discovery of surfing. Newport beach can be found close again on the coastline is Newport Beach which is a collection of small islands surrounding a small bay. Therefore boating is the activity of choice here and it is one of the largest pleasure harbours in the state. There is a famous race called the Enseda race which is held every May and an annual Christmas festival of lights. Fishing is also popular here and local seafood can be sampled in the various restaurants. |
